There are many more intriguing orca behaviors for scientists and curious kids to examine. The Center for Whale Research has a list that includes back dives and belly flops, lunges and half-breaches, burps and cartwheels.
And then thereâs another one of my favorites: the spyhop.
When orcas come up to breathe, they usually expose just the top of their head and blowhole. But when an orca spyhops, it sticks its whole head out of the water, sometimes far enough to show its fins. The movement looks graceful, a smooth rise and fall that lasts only a moment.
